Maj was five year old girl. She wanted to help her mother.
She said, "Ma, I want to help in the household work."
"Okay my dear," said mother.
A vegetable vendor passed by and mother bought some green peas.
"Maj will you shell these peas for lunch?" asked Mother.
"Surely," said Maj in her sing-song tone and started right away.
A drummer passed by. Maj left her work and ran towards the gate to see the show. She forgot about the peas. After some time mother called,
"Maj did you shell the peas?"
"It is a lot of work, Mum. I feel tired," said Maj.
Mother removed some peas and put them in a bag. She gave Maj a few peas to shell.
"Maj, you can shell a few peas. Will you?" she asked.
"Yes, of course!" said Maj willingly.
Mother sat knitting next to Maj. As the girl shelled the peas, Mother added a few more now and then. They kept on talking and Maj felt good doing her work. When all the peas were shelled, Mother showed Maj the empty bag.
She said, "Look here Maj,you have done a great job! You shelled all the peas. Thank you!"
That afternoon, Mother prepared peas rice.
